The Third Joshua Tree

I like being able to make similar images with different feelings to them by working with the lighting conditions at a given moment and using technique to emphasize the feeling I am after.

As the light changed from one evening to the next, I had the opportunity to make very different images of Joshua Trees in Joshua Tree National Park, California.

The first tree was a silhouette made at the during the last moments of light and colour in the sky – it reminded me of a day’s last breath, the final hurrah.

The second tree was my tree for the end of the world. It was about peace and simplicity.

Now this, my third tree, is about drama. It was taken at the beginning of sunset when all the shades of blue, pink, orange and yellow light up in the sky. I got close to the tree, positioned myself low to the ground, and angled the camera up to the sky so that none of the tree’s branches would touch the trees in the background (or at least that is what I was trying for, I think a few bits actually do touch).

To maintain detail in the tree against such a bright background, I made three exposures and combined them in post-processing using Photomatix.

Merry Christmas! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season.

Nice capture, Anne. How far apart were your exposures? +/-2?

So sharp and so much detail in the trunk of the tree. These three images of the Joshua Tree are iconic. Sadly when we did a fly/drive round California we were not able to enter Joshua Tree NP due to a recent earthquake. A very Happy New Year, Anne.
