In anticipation of an upcoming trip to Yosemite, I decided to upgrade my gear and bought a Canon 7D and a 24-105 f/4 L lens. Here are my first shots with my new setup. I am also getting a Gitzo traveller tripod with a Really Right Stuff ballhead, but I’m picking those up in the USA when I get there. So here I used my ancient 20 pound tripod that shakes if I exhale while photographing. I can’t wait for that new tripod!
I always forget to cover up the eyepiece when I am not looking through it during long exposures. This was the first time I remembered (well actually I was reminded, thanks Ray) and was surprised to see the difference in exposure settings.
Looks like you and your new 7D have got off to a great start! Your old tripod may be headed for redundancy, but I recommend you keep your voice-activated assistant.
Any specific feature of the 7D that forced your hand to your wallet?

Yes, the 7D has a dual processor and a very strong shutter enabling 8 fps!! No more missing the wildlife shots, I hope. I had some great results with the whales lately. It also has 18mp, a more sophisticated sensor, better auto-focus mechanism, 100% viewfinder and probably other stuff I haven’t discovered yet. But the dual processor and shutter are the biggest difference I think. Oh yeah, and it has HD video which I haven’t tried yet. You can take still shots while taking HD video at the same time, that’s cool.

After remembering to turn off my image stabilization for the first time, I forgot to turn it back on again and my (hand-held) shots of the big moon the following day were all a little soft. Live and learn…
