My photo of this Stellar Sea Lion received an honourable mention in the SPCA’s “Wildlife in Focus – Urban Wildlife Photo Contest”. The photo contest raised money for Wild Arc, the Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre on Vancouver Island, a branch of the SPCA.
The Sea Lion is sunbathing on an Ocean Data Buoy, which collects data about the weather and ocean currents among other things. I took the photos from my boat, which poses its own challenges for driving and photographing at the same time. I had to put the boat in neutral and take a few shots before the wind pushed me too close to the buoy. I didn’t want to disturb the peace these sea lions were enjoying.
Here is another Sea Lion and an image taken from farther away that shows the entire buoy and the Coast Guard station in the background.
See the winning photos in two categories, wild settings, and backyard habitats. My shot is in backyard habitats because it has a man-made object in it, although I do feel like the ocean is in my backyard.
