My lawyer called. The day before completion on the house sale, never a good sign. Turns out the bank wont release the funds to the buyer because their parents, who were co-signing the mortgage, never signed the paperwork. And now they’re in Africa.
Why do lawyers and bankers always wait to the last minute to do anything? We made the deal 10 weeks ago and I’ve been calling my lawyer to find out why it is taking so long to do the paperwork. Now it is the day before completion and the banks haven’t received the documents they need. There is some technical difficulty receiving a fax from Africa.
Do they not have fax machines in Africa?
Do they not have email in Africa?
What about phones, can someone phone them? I really don’t care that it is the middle of the night there.
Do they have to wait until the last day to find this out?
I was hoping to write a post about the first day of my new life and how it was all went so smoothly and we popped the champagne bottle at our first RV park. Instead I’m writing about whether I should scream or cry. I really hope that tomorrow I can write about popping the champagne bottle and toasting fax machines.
Oh, Anne: I’m sorry this had to happen so close to your new beginning. I hope tomorrow brings better news.
Oh no Anne! That isn’t good news. Having lived in Africa, I can say that depending where you are, getting simple things accomplished can take all the patience you can muster. I don’t say this to dishearten you but to prepare you so that you can be pleasantly surprised when it all comes together. And it will. I promise!
Oh no Anne 🙁 praying!
*wince*
*cringe*
*Ouch!*
*hugs*
It’s not the end of the world, at least. That’s not until October 21.
Thinking speedy paperwork thoughts for you!

Wow! That is a big “hiccup”. I hope it works out for you.
Oh dear, I am so sorry! This is a huge disappointment for you! I have to agree with Sabrina. . . my in-laws lived in Africa (Tanzania) for several years, and yes, technology is far, far behind there. And the North America ethic to get things done swiftly is most certainly lacking. But eventually things will come right for you and you’ll be on your way. You just need to be patient until then! Good luck!
Bummer. But a hurdle at the outset teaches you immediately about the need for flexibility. My father in law unexpectedly had major surgery on the day we were to leave for our RTW trip. Instead of winging it to Peru to start our year long journey, we flew to Ottawa not knowing what our, or his, future would look like. It all turned out well but we learned, early on, not to get too caught up in plans. Maybe you could live in the RV in the driveway for a few days? Heck…it’ll make a great story!
Holy crap. I am SO sorry to read this today here Anne. I never have good luck with lawyers or banks myself, so I completely understand your frustration there. I’d like to say something witty to make you smile there, but I really suspect you’ve got your hands full. We’re hoping and praying that someone gets this all sorted out for you TODAY here, and you can get back on track with your plans. Best wishes, my friend; we’re so sorry for you on this temporary setback.
Thank you friends for all your support and encouragement during my “snag”. It did all work out in the end (big sigh), my house is sold and the money in the bank. I’m all ready to go!
Glad it worked out Anne. I have to agree about the last minute stuff with lawyers and bankers. Can’t wait to read more about your journey.
