You didn’t think I meant me did you? No, no, I only photograph other crazy people who try such a thing! The first ascent was made in 1893 using a wooden ladder for the first 350 feet. Today approximately 5,000 climbers ascend the tower ever year.
I like to create close up abstract images of patterns in rocks, but it does make it difficult to get a sense of scale. If you look carefully at this image, you can see two climbers in the lower left of the image.
They are hard to pick out, but once you find them you instantly get a better sense of scale. The portion of the tower shown is only a small bit about 500 feet up the tower.
Devil’s Tower is a wonderful place to photograph and I can’t wait to return. I would love to get some moon shots and star trails here.
Wow Anne. This is a great shot. I didn’t see the climbers until I read the post. The scale is huge. Reminds me of a rigged El Capitan.
