On our first night at Joshua Tree National Park, in California, the clouds looked like they had a lot of potential, and so Ray and I went to one of our favourite locations from last year’s visit, Jumbo Rocks, where we were welcomed by the most glorious sunset.
Standing on the rocks that night as the sky turned from blue to pink to red to purple was truly magical.

Of course I have a zillion photos of the sunset that night, some with more colours than this one, but I chose this one as my favourite because of the silhouette of the two people standing on top of the rocks in the distance. Those two people give scale to the image and help the viewer imagine themselves there.
On the drive home, I was thinking about all the sunsets I’ve seen, and I think this one might just be the best sunset EVER!!
I made this image with my Sony NEX6 and the 55-210mm lens at 180mm, ISO 200, f/8, 1/100 second.
Wow, gorgeous sunset!
I love the color but what makes this image even better is the silhouette of the two people on the ridge. How are you liking the NEX6 Anne? I have had a NEX7 as a backup for a while and love it. I just ordered the A7 and I am looking forward to taking it through its paces.
Thank you very much Len! I am loving the NEX6. It’s great having such a lightweight system and the photos are coming out very sharp. I’d like to hear how the a7 turns out for you.
Anne, beautiful shot. Am at airport now on my way to Joshua Tree. You have so many good shots from the park, any location advice for a first time visitor???
Will be around all week. JTNP and going to Salton Sea.
Let’s meet up. Will be shooting the a7r, my new love.
Hi Stephen, well Jumbo Rocks is a must see. I also enjoy Hidden Valley and of course the Cholla Garden. But really you can stop anywhere along the side of the road and just walk out into the park and find something awesome to photograph. I’m always way behind in my photo processing, so I’m afraid I’m no longer anywhere near Joshua Tree. We’re way over in Saguaro in Arizona now! Thanks you very much for your visit and comments, I hope you enjoy the park.
Deep reds in the sunset are dramatic. The people give dimension to how large the rocks are in that part of the high desert.
Anne, you have a right to be proud of this photographs. It is a 10.
Thank you so much Charles, I really appreciate that!
Absolutely stunning photo!!, I could look at this all day I’m sure!
Thanks Bev 🙂
