Last night I told Ray that I thought I had run out of hope. It’s been over 2 years since I developed an auto-immune disease - one that is supposed to go away someday - and while I am ever so slowly improving, it’s been a long haul. So wasn’t I surprised this morning when I received my “poem of the day” - the first one I received since I signed up for it as a motivation … [Read more...]
Long Exposure Bird Photography
One of my favourite watering holes on the pacific flyway is Whitewater Draw in Arizona. Here Sandhill Cranes arrive by the tens of thousands every winter. It’s a phenomenon I’ve witnessed a few times before (you can see the photos from those trips here.) On my last visit I made over a thousand photos on the first day and, after reviewing them, I realized they were … [Read more...]
Reasons to Love Vancouver Island in Summer: #3 Bald Eagles
We have a bald eagle nest in the estuary behind our campsite in Campbell River, British Columbia. It's too far away to photograph (for me), but with a spotting scope, we can watch over the eaglets. In spring when we arrive here, we see the adults coming and going with sticks. Once I saw and heard one of the adults break a branch off of a neighbouring tree! There was a great … [Read more...]
An Eagle’s Welcome
I can't remember the last time I made an image, processed it, and published it on the same day. I'm lucky if I process my images in the same year sometimes! But today seems like a good day to break with tradition, jump ahead, and share what's happening now. We just arrived at our favourite campsite in Campbell River, British Columbia, where we'll spend the next four … [Read more...]
Sandhill Cranes at Whitewater Draw, Arizona – Part 2
Sometimes it takes me awhile to get around to processing my favourite photos. I'm not sure why I do that - I tuck them away like a wildcard. That's what happened with these photos I made on the second day I visited Whitewater Draw in Arizona. If you missed part 1 of this series, be sure to check it out! This was my favourite new "find" from last year's snowbird trip. I … [Read more...]
Canada Geese
I like photographing all animals, not just the exotic ones. These Canada Geese were in the estuary behind our campsite in Campbell River, British Columbia. When they first take off, their wings touch the water and create big splashes, and then they appear to run on top of the water. One of the things I like most about this photo is the pattern of splashes you can see … [Read more...]
A Flock of Flamingos
This is a photo from a couple of years ago that I just never got around to publishing. I made this image of a flock of flamingos at the San Diego Zoo in California. I like the pattern that the flamingos created as they slept so tightly packed together. Only a couple in the middle are awake. The sun was quite high in the sky creating a shadow under each one. … [Read more...]
Bald Eagles on Vancouver Island BC
After last year's amazing wildlife viewing from our campsite in Campbell River, BC, Ray and I decided to come back for four months this year and we've enjoyed another incredible summer. One day we walked out to the spit just at the end of the road and there were all sorts of people out enjoying picnics, walks, kite flying, and there were even a few crazy joggers. "You'll … [Read more...]
