The world cannot be all bad when there are moments like these. Sometimes it feels like the world is full of only terrible things. If you watch the news, no one could blame you for thinking that. That's why I like to get away from cities and television and get out in nature where I can appreciate the beauty and positive things in the world. There are good things here … [Read more...]
Waiting for the Moment in the Desert near Ajo Arizona
While driving south along Highway 85 towards Ajo, Arizona, I noticed some really cool rock formations in the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range. Unfortunately, because it's an air force range and they do air-to-ground bombing practice, you're not allowed in. In fact, when we drove by there were A10 Warthogs shooting 30mm canons at targets. It was quite an impressive sight to … [Read more...]
A Predictable Magic
Just another desert sunset I spend my days exploring With my eye on the horizon The spot the where the sun will later set Will a blanket of clouds extinguish the light? Will truant clouds create a pastel veil? Or will the clouds disperse for the sun’s rays to infiltrate? I spend my days exploring Willing the clouds to appear and then break The sun sinks below the … [Read more...]
Organ Pipe Cactus at Sunset
Here I am back at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in Arizona and I realize I've looped myself! I have photos from this location that I made a year ago that I haven't published yet. Here's one of them: Making an image like this is all about waiting for the perfect light. I wanted nice sunset colours and to have the cactus in silhouette, but with just enough light … [Read more...]
Desert Sunset at Joshua Tree National Park
One of the reasons I like going down south in the winter (and there are many) is the incredible sunsets in the desert. It seems like every day is a clear blue sky day with no clouds and then, as the day goes on, the clouds move in just in time for sunset. There are stages to the sunset that we just don’t get on the coast. Or perhaps it doesn’t happen frequently enough … [Read more...]
Sunset at the Estuary in Campbell River, BC
A few evenings ago we were treated to the most beautiful sunset at our campsite at Thunderbird RV park in Campbell River, BC. This is our view from the back window of the RV! I'm so glad we picked an RV with a big picture window in the back. The estuary fills up with water at high tide, which just happened to coincide with sunset, producing beautiful … [Read more...]
Sunset on a Sleeping Princess
Our favourite new campsite is a BLM site called Gunsight Wash near Organ Pipe Catus National Monument. In the distant hills is a formation known as the sleeping princess, and we had a great view of her right from our site as the sun set behind her. Imagine her lying on her back, the sun setting behind her head on the left, and the rest of her body on the … [Read more...]
Just Three of the Many Jumbo Rocks
I think I could spend days photographing in this location. The only problem with it is that the campground bearing it's name is extremely popular so there are always lots of people at Jumbo Rocks in Joshua Tree National Park. Please click the image to view a larger version. Our RV is too big to fit in that campground, and I don't think I would like being near so many … [Read more...]
